Toppenish, WASH–56 workers at a Toppenish food container plant are on strike. Members of the Teamsters Local 760 union at Silgan containers declared the strike at nine o’clock this Thursday morning.

Union leader John Parks says Silgan presented the Local 760 members with a “last, best, and final” contract. The members find that contract unacceptable. According to Parks, the workers will strike 24/7 until the dispute is resolved.

Parks says the union and Silgan have come to an agreement on all but two issues: employee contributions to their health care plan, and wages.

Silgan leaders did not respond to our requests for an interview.

Why when as a result of the effort of each individual we are being told we must earn less income for our families?

In spite of the record profits enjoyed by this corporation ( which are brought about by the hard work and dedication of the employees) the Toppenish, Washington plant is still on strike.

This strike was brought on by the insistence of management that employees take a cut in pay this contract.

The company states this is more in line with the current depressed economy! This hurts not only the employees but the entire community as each individual has less disposable income and each merchants suffers as a result every time we allow this to happen!
